Duplex stainless was first introduced to the Oil and Gas industry in the late 1970’s when it was considered for natural gas pipelines.
Duplex stainless steels are known as"duplex" since they've a two-phase microstructure comprising grains of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel. Once duplex stainless steel has been melted it solidifies in the liquid phase to some totally ferritic structure
Duplex Steel Properties
There are two major advantages of duplex that make this material so appealing to the Gas and Oil market. To begin with, it has exceptional immunity to the many corrosive media which are ordinarily seen in both onshore and offshore environments. These mainly consist of CO2, H2S gases, chlorides, very low ph ailments, and even water. Duplex steel high immunity to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking is of special significance here. Second, its high power is very beneficial in handling the high pressures encountered at great fires.
