What is P9 Material & Pipe

The ASTM A335 Grade P9 Alloy Steel Pipe is a chromium molybdenum alloy with a composition of 4 percent chromium. The A335 P9 tubing is used in high-temperature applications, made from ferritic Alloy-Steel. The chemical composition of the ASTM A335 P9 material contains metals such as molybdenum and chromium. There is an improvement in the tensile strength of the alloy due to the inclusion of metals such as molybdenum and chromium. The yield strength of the welded pipe of ASTM A335 p9 is 205 Mpa, while 415 Mpa is its tensile strength. The pipe’s elongation percentage is around 30 percent.

Both of these components are known to enhance the wear resistance of the tubing, its impact properties, longevity and elastic limits. They also increase their mechanical properties, such as reducing brittleness, preventing grain growth, increasing creep strength at high temperatures and providing excellent softening resistance.

In the A335 P9 pipe, the chromium content makes it highly corrosion resistant. The A335 P9, therefore, has excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. ASTM A335 P9 alloy steel tubes that are externally coated with either black oil paint or anti-corrosion oil exhibit strong corrosion resistance in addition to chromium. It could be galvanized with zinc as well. The zinc galvanization improves its resistance to atmospheric corrosion.

SA335 P9 Pipes can be produced either by hot finishing or cold drawing by shaping them. The pipes must be finished with heat treatment after formation, which involves complete or isothermal annealing, normalizing and tempering.

The pipes are available in plain ends, threaded ends or bevel end. And both ends of these tubes are protected by caps made of plastic. The pipes and tubes of ASME SA335 Grade P9 are developed in several types, such as rectangle, coiled, round, square, hydraulic, U-shaped and pancake coils.

The A335 grade P9 pipes are used in the applications including the industries that require transportation of gas and fluid at high pressure and temperatures from off-site or on-site to the plants, the A335 grade P9 pipes are used. For example, power plants, nuclear plants, petrochemical industries and industrial boilers require pipes to move oil, water, vapour and gas from the site to the facility.
