Material Specifications
Carbon steel butt-weld fittings are typically made from wrought carbon steel grades designed for pressure service. The most common material spec is ASTM A234 WPB, which covers wrought carbon steel fittings for moderate and high-temperature service. In ASTM notation, WPB means “Weldable, Pressure, Grade B” – a grade of carbon steel with a minimum yield of about 240 MPa. Other grades in A234 include alloy-steel variants (WP5, WP9, etc.) for elevated temperature or corrosion resistance, and A234 also covers welded constructions. Typical chemical limits for A234 WPB are ~0.35% C, ~0.30% Si, and Mn up to ~1.35%.
Buttweld fittings may be forged from seamless pipe or plate. Common base materials include ASTM A106 Grade B (seamless carbon pipe) or ASTM A53. Forgings can also use carbon steel plates such as ASTM A285 or A516 for larger diameters. For low-temperature or pressure applications, specifications like ASTM A420 WPL6 (low-temperature carbon steel) are used. The fitting ends (bevels) and welds must meet ASME B16.25 preparation standards.
Applicable Standards
Carbon Steel Buttweld fittings must meet international standards for dimensions, materials, and manufacturing. Key standards include:
Manufacturers will typically state compliance with applicable standards (e.g. “ASTM A234 WPB, ANSI B16.9, MSS-SP-75”) on product certificates.

ISO 9001:2015 certification covers the entire operation here, not just the final inspection stage. Raw material comes in verified, cutting tolerances get logged, and nothing leaves without a dimensional sign-off. That discipline keeps rejection rates at the project site low.
Our Mumbai warehouse holds over 5,000 CS buttweld fitting line items in stock. Standard sizes ship within the same week. For urgent shutdowns or fast-track project schedules, priority dispatch kicks in with no surcharge attached to it.
Third-party inspection through Bureau Veritas, SGS, Lloyds, DNV, or TPI runs on request and fits most pre-booked orders without extending lead time. Mill Test Certificates come in EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 format depending on what the end-client specifies. Bulk orders from 500 kg upward get tiered pricing, with sharper discounts at the 2 MT and 5 MT marks. Export crating follows ISPM-15, with poly-wrapped bevel ends inside.
Supply runs across Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Chennai, and Hyderabad, with inland delivery landing in 3 to 5 working days for most destinations.
Every fitting comes with a mill certificate. Incoming ASTM A234 WPB billets or plates go through chemical composition verification before anything gets cut. That single step prevents grade mix-ups that would only surface during PMI at the project site.
From there, plasma or saw cutting shapes the blanks to pre-form geometry. Hot forming follows, pressing the blank into the required radius and wall profile under controlled temperature conditions. After forming, a normalising or annealing cycle removes residual stress from the forming pass and stabilises the grain structure for pressure service.
CNC machining brings the internal diameter and wall thickness into tolerance. Beveling then cuts the weld-end prep to ASME B16.25 angles so field welders hit their root gap on the first fit-up. Dimensional inspection runs 100% using calibrated gauges checked against ASME B16.9 reference values. Hydrostatic testing holds each fitting at 1.5x rated working pressure. Shot blasting to Sa 2.5 preps the surface before rust-preventive coating goes on. Final packing uses export-grade crates stencilled with heat number, grade, size, and schedule so incoming inspection at the project site takes minutes, not hours.
Nine tests are run on every production lot before dispatch clearance.
PMI testing with portable XRF analysers confirms ASTM A234 WPB chemistry against the heat certificate. Any deviation stops the lot. Hydrostatic testing holds pressure at 1.5x rated working pressure for a minimum 30-second hold. Radiography per ASTM E94 checks weld zones for internal discontinuities that visual checks miss entirely. Ultrasonic testing maps wall thickness uniformity and catches sub-surface laminations before they reach a pressure boundary.
Hardness testing verifies Brinell values stay inside the ASTM A234 permitted band. Tensile and yield strength testing pulls representative samples from each heat. Impact testing to Charpy V-notch applies for low-temperature service grades where absorbed energy at -29°C must meet the grade minimum. Dimensional inspection records wall thickness, OD, bevel angle, and centre-to-face distances on every piece. Visual inspection closes the loop on surface condition, end prep quality, and marking accuracy.
Full test reports travel with the shipment. Third-party witness inspection slots run alongside production for clients who require it.

The main types are 45° elbows, 90° long-radius elbows, 90° short-radius elbows, equal tees, reducing tees, concentric reducers, eccentric reducers, end caps, crosses, and stub ends. Each type handles a specific flow direction change, diameter transition, or line termination function in a piping system.
Seamless fittings press from a solid billet with no weld seam, which makes them the default for pressure classes above 1500# and applications with high fatigue cycles. Welded fittings form from plate with a longitudinal seam joint, cost 15 to 25% less at large diameters, and suit moderate-pressure services where seam quality meets the inspection requirement.
Forged fittings join the pipe through threaded or socket-weld connections and top out at 4″ NB, making them the choice for instrument tapping points and small-bore branch lines. Buttweld fittings integrate directly into the pipeline through a full-penetration weld, cover ½” to 48″ NB, and carry pressure and temperature ratings that forged threaded fittings cannot match at larger diameters.
